Universal Edibility Test

Field protocol to verify whether an unknown plant is safe to eat when no expert identification is available.

Critical alert

DANGER: Never skip a step. If you feel nausea, burning, or dizziness at any stage, stop immediately and induce vomiting.

1

Separate by Plant Part

Divide the plant into roots, stems, leaves, buds, and flowers. Test only one part at a time — never mix parts in a single test.

2

Odor Check

Crush a small sample and smell it. Reject anything with a strong, bitter, almond, or rotten odor before any contact test.

3

Skin Contact Test

Rub the selected part on the inside of your wrist or elbow. Wait 15 minutes. Redness, burning, or itching means the plant is toxic — discard it.

4

Lip Test

If the skin shows no reaction, hold a small piece on your outer lip for 3 minutes. Remove immediately if you feel tingling or numbness.

5

Tongue Test

Place a small piece on your tongue for 15 minutes without swallowing. Spit it out if you detect burning, itching, or numbness.

6

Chew and Spit

Chew a small portion thoroughly, hold it in your mouth for 15 minutes, then spit it out. Wait 8 hours. Do not eat or drink anything else during this window.

7

Small Swallow Test

If no reaction occurs, swallow a small bite and wait 8 hours. Monitor for cramps, nausea, or dizziness.

8

Full Portion

If still no symptoms, eat a normal portion of that plant part only. Wait another 8 hours before testing a different part or species.
