Bowline Knot

The king of fixed loops. Forms a non-slipping loop that never jams, even after extreme load.

Critical alert

SAFETY: Never use for human rappel or climbing without a backup stopper knot on the free end.

Form the Pit

Make a small fixed loop (the pit) on the standing line. The working end (the snake) must lie on the upper side of the loop.

Snake Out of the Pit

Pass the working end up through the loop from bottom to top.

Tail up through the loop

Around the Tree

Wrap the snake behind the standing line (the tree), then back down through the pit.

Dress and Lock

Grip the snake and the loop rim in one hand, the standing line in the other. Pull firmly in opposite directions to set the knot.
