Cook Dinner in Camp
A simple evening kitchen: stove off the tent, one pot, eat before dark, food sealed before you sleep.
Never cook inside a tent or under a low fly — CO and fabric fires. In bear or raccoon country, cook 50+ m downwind of the sleep site and hang or canister the leftovers.
Kitchen 3 metres out
Clear a stable pad of mineral soil or rock, 3 m from nylon. Shield the stove from wind with a pack or stone, never with the tent wall.
Required gear
Water, then food
Boil water first (tea, rehydrate, dishes). One-pot: starch, then protein, fat last. If rain is sideways, cold-soak in a sealed jar instead of fighting a wet stove.
Required gear
Eat before last light
Finish cooking while you can still see the valve and the pot. Night cooking spills fuel and loses utensils. Eat in the kitchen, not in the sleeping bag.
Police the site
Strain dish water through a cloth away from the creek. Pack every scent (food, toothpaste, trash) before you lie down. Stove cool, fuel capped, pot inverted to drain.
